Rowan Gillson
Rowan began his photographic career as a 15 year-old working the retail counter of The Camera Shop, in Saint Cloud, MN. At 18 Rowan joined founder Mark Stanley's original IPS team and shortly thereafter became the Senior Art Editor and Staff Photographer for the Advanced Training Institute in Oak Brook, IL. Just 2 years later, Rowan took over the Directorship of the Institute of Photographic Studies and continues to provide leadership to this day.
Throughout the past 10 years, Rowan has shot hundreds of thousands of images in 18 different countries. His work has been published in newspapers in the United States, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and New Zealand. Several books, including Minnesota 24/7 and Illinois 24/7, feature Rowan's images. A number of Christian ministries—the Institute in Basic Life Principles, Summit Ministries, Christian Academy in Japan, New Zealand Baptist Union, and others—have also benefited from his unique photographic perspective.
Rowan came to know Christ as his savior at a young age, and developed a heart for the Kingdom of God early on in his life. For many years his passion has been challenging young people to experience a dynamic relationship with God that impacts every area of their lives. This passion has motivated Rowan to be involved in a number of leadership roles in several ministries. Additionally, Rowan served on staff for 6 years with the Children's Institute, leading children's Bible camps throughout the United States, Canada, Taiwan, and Romania.
In the spring of 2004, Rowan’s role in IPS reached a turning point as God made IPS his personal vision and ministry. In his words, 'I found myself seeking the Lord in a deeper way than ever before, looking for direction for the next phase of my life. At that point I felt God directing me to pursue photography with my whole heart. It was as if God said, “What's that in your hand?” “A camera,” I responded. “I want you to take your camera and use it to serve me.” God finished. Since that day, my love of photography and passion for young people have been merged into a pursuit of God that is changing the world.'
