Photojournalism - Course Home

Do you have a passion for people? A message you think others need to hear or see? Want to learn to challenge the heart and mind of those who see your pictures? Here's your chance! This five-day workshop will train you to influence the worldview of those around you as you learn to invest emotional impact, conceptual ideas, and photographic analogies into your images.

You can expect to be challenged to identify the key aspects of an event or issue and to construct a series of photos that accurately tell a story. While time is spent discussing traditional "objective" photojournalism, much of the course is aimed at a more subjective, story-telling way of focusing our images on a specific need or issue.

This is a fast-paced, completely digital workshop. Instructors Will Thornton and Mandy Novotny will combine tried-and-true techniques with practical insights gained through hard fought photographic experience.

Daily photo story assignments and photo essays, combined with personal instruction and image review sessions, ensure that students will receive an in-depth personal look at the powerful world of photojournalism.

Workshop Venue

Classes will be held in Douglasville, Georgia. Group rates will be negotiated with a local hotel, but this housing is optional. Students are free to arrange their own housing or commute to the workshop each day.

Sessions will run from 7:45 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. each day.

IPS will be managing the assigning and distribution of hotel rooms. Registration for housing can be done through Will Thornton (770.510.3158), as well as any questions or special rooming requests.

Costs and Discounts

  • Tuition: $574 ($25 discount for registrations postmarked by March 1, 2009)
  • Housing: $325 (Optional: per student; two per room)
  • Meals: $125 (Optional: $25 per day, Monday-Friday)

Transportation at the Workshop

All of our workshops require a great deal of walking, but we will also be using vans or buses to allow students and instructors to reach photo assignments and destinations.

Airport Shuttles

Our housing is just about 30 minutes from the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) in Atlanta. IPS staff will be able to make several trips to the Atlanta airport throughout the day before and after each workshop. Please contact the IPS office with your travel plans and to arrange your shuttle details.
